Toshiba today introduced a new top model Satellite® laptop, the M65-S809. It also has a Windows XP Professional version, the M65-S8091. In their press release, like many other manufacturers, Toshiba claimed that the Satellite M65-S809 is a multimedia desktop replacement powerhouse, featuring a 17” Diagonal Widescreen WXGA monitor with TruBriteTM Technology, DVD SuperMulti Drive, 100GB Hard Drive and more in a “portable” 7.3 lbs (3.31 kg) package.
Can it really replace a desktop? Well, if you’re not much of a gamer, perhaps it will do the job. If you’re a gamer who plays lots of 3D graphics games, this heavy and not so portable laptop is not really for you because it employs the Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 900 with up to 128 MB shared video memory, instead of a real graphic card.
The unit’s DVD SuperMulti Drive (+/-R double layer) reads and writes up to 11 formats. Built-in harman/kardon® stereo speakers and SRS® TruSurround XTTM technology enable a rich audio experience while a spacious 5400 rpm 100GB hard drive gives users quick access to MP3s, digital pictures and video files.
An ExpressCardTM slot is included for simple I/O expansion, including flash memory, communications, multimedia and security. Toshiba Express Media Player allows the user to watch DVDs or listen to CDs without booting up the Microsoft Windows XP operating system.
The Satellite M65-S809 is powered by Intel Centrino Mobile Technology with the Pentium M processor 740 (1.73 GHz, 2 MB L2 Cache, 533 MHz FSB), which comes with 802.11 b/g wireless capabilities. It also comes with 512 MB DDR2 SDRAM memory; RGB, 3 USB 2.0, S-Video Out, RJ-11 modem (v.92), RJ-45 LAN, IEEE-1394, headphone and microphone ports; a 8-cell lithium ion battery (4300mAh) with up to 4.75 hours of battery life; as well as a PC Card slot (either PC Express Card Slot or Type II PC Card Slot, customer’s choice)and a PC Express slot.
The retail price is US$1499.99 for the Satellite M65-S809 (Windows XP Home), and $1579.99 for the Satellite M65-S8091 (Windows XP Pro).
