After releasing their last model months ago, finally Dbtel (Taiwan) introduced their latest handset model, the Dbtel M50 “iPod Phone” in Taiwan right before Chinese New Year. It measures 99×45 x 17.7 mm in dimensions and weighs around 80 g. This handset features a decent 2.0-megapixel CMOS camera, a 2” 262K color touch screen, and comes in two color options: black and white.
As you can see, the Dbtel M50 pretty much resembles Apple’s iPod, in both chassis color and control buttons design, except that it also comes with four dialing-related function buttons like the Sony S700. I indeed think the phone will look even better if those four buttons have the same color as the body of the handset, instead of reflective chrome. We don’t know how sensitive is the touch button in the middle, but according to the folks at PhoneDaily, it’s less accurate than the iPod when you’re making circling movements on the touch button. Hopefully this is not limited by the hardware itself and is adjustable through its firmware.
The 2.0-megapixel camera is assisted by a flash light in dark condition. It also comes with 15-25 cm macro mode, which produces quite decent shots as you can see in the picture above. Other than still image, you can also record videos into MPEG-4 and 3GPP formats, the sensitivity of its CMOS sensor is good enough to capture fireworks at night.
Like any other newer handsets, the Dbtel M50 comes with MP3 player functions which can display complete track information. Feel like singing as the music is playing? The M50 also comes with lyric display function as the song plays, this feature is quite common in Japanese and Korean handsets nowadays, but still rare in handsets made by other countries.
To let you enjoy the multimedia and photo shooting features on the Dbtel M50, a RS-MMC memory expansion slot. However the bad news is, the slot is located under the battery, right next to the SIM card slot. That means you will have to shut down the phone and remove the battery everytime you are putting on or taking of the RS-MMC card.
Overall, the Dbtel M50 looks interesting enough with all those nice features. The retail price is yet to be known. As a tri-band (900/1800/1900) handset, I would say it’s a good buy if the price is in the range of US$450 – 480.
