CNET reviews wrote a weekend project on iPod Linux recently, which introduces the iPod Linux Project, and guide you through the installation process which takes approximately one hour according to them. Other than the ability of playing video on your iPod as described in CNET’s article, as an iPod version of Linux operating system, iPod Linux basically let you do pretty much as long as the click wheel is sufficient for the control or input for the software. Here’s a
list of applications for iPod Linux.
iPod Linux officially supports on all 1st, 2nd, and 3rd generation iPods. Even though the fourth generation click wheel, mini, U2, Photo, and Shuffle iPods, iPod Linux is still installable and runnable on these iPods.
Make sure you backup your files before installing iPod Linux. If anything goes wrong, you can always use Apple’s Firmware Restoren Utility to restore iPod’s operating system.
