Hitachi Debuts Bling Drives

Last Friday, Hitachi presented their new 1” and 1.8” hard drives introduced in concept earlier this year under the monikers “Mikey” and “Slim”. Both microdrives are expected to be used in high capacity portable devices such as smartphones, media players and PDAs. They feature shockproof technology known as extra sensory protection (ESP) to guard against accidental drops and other accidents.

Mikey, which is officially called Hitachi Microdrive 3K8 is available in two versions with different storage capicity of 6GB and 8GB. This tiny 1” microdrive is also the first in the industry that is going to employ CE-ATA interface, allowing it to be plugged into handheld devices such as PDAs, smartphones, and audio/video player/recorder. It is nearly 20% smaller than its predecessor, and consumes 40% less power.

Slim

 Slim - Hitachi Travelstar C4K60Another novelty, the 1.8” Travelstar C4K60 Slim, is 30% thinner than its predecessor, measuring 5mm on the single-disk model. Two models are available, namely the 30GB single-disk model and the 60GB double-disk model.
