Norsat International Inc just announced an ultra portable satellite terminal for broadband communication. Alright it’s not ultra portable comparing with other portable gadgets and you don’t carry it around when you’re walking on the street, however it is the most portable satellite terminal that has ever been made for the consumers market, and it does indeed feed into a backpack.
This unit, called the Norsat GLOBETrekker, measuring 495×685 x 335 mm in dimensions, comes inside a backpack which allows users to bring it around easily. The GLOBETrekker is ideally suited for users who need to initiate broadband communications on short notice or on a temporary basis. Examples are special forces; special police; first responders (fire, police, ambulance); disaster recover / business continuity managers; construction, mining, oil & gas teams; accident investigation units; C3 Tactical units; search and rescue teams; journalists; mobile border checkpoint officers; travelling VIPs; as well as scientific and research expeditions.
According to Norsat, the GLOBETrekker comes equipped with ‘built-in intelligence’ which relieves the user from lower level tasks. This intelligence enables the system to automatically acquire the satellite; and operate unattended in harsh and hostile conditions. It can establish and maintain a reliable broadband link with bandwidth up to 4Mbps. The system operates in the Ku-Band (14.0 – 14.5 GHz), and optionally in Ku Extended Band, Ka-Band and X-Band for trasmissions; and 10.95 – 12.75 GHz for receptions.
Norsat is currently accepting pre-orders for the GLOBETrekker. Norsat can be found in Booth OEE145 in the Outdoor Europa Exhibit Area at IBC 2005 in Amsterdam (September 9th – September 13th) and at Booth 1145 in the Canadian Pavilion section of DSEi at the ExCeL Centre in London (September 13th – 16th, 2005).
